EPR/DNP Research Faculty, #49133
The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL) is searching for a Research Faculty to support user operations and develop unique microwave instrumentation that will facilitate new research capabilities in the area of high-field magnetic resonance, particularly dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) at fields/frequencies up to 36 T / 970 GHz. The NHMFL is an NSF-funded user facility that operates the world’s most powerful electromagnets at Florida State University, the University of Florida and Los Alamos National Lab, including 45 T DC and 35.2 T (1.5 GHz) NMR magnets, and DNP spectrometers currently operating up to 14.1 T / 600 MHz / 395 GHz.
In collaboration with NHMFL users, the ideal candidate is expected to develop an independent research program in the broadly defined area of magnetic resonance, with emphasis on EPR/DNP methodology. The position will require operation and maintenance of existing microwave hardware, such as a 395 GHz Bruker-CPI first-generation gyrotron and a variety of millimeter and sub-millimeter wave sources, detectors and quasi-optical spectrometers that support the NHMFL Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Electron Magnetic Resonance (EMR) user programs. An ability to design and develop future generations of high-field EPR/DNP instrumentation is expected. Expertise in the following areas is also desirable, but not essential: radio frequency engineering; and cryogenic techniques, e.g., low temperature probe development, particularly for EMR/NMR/DNP. The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate: an ability to train and mentor students; effective oral and written scientific communication skills; and the potential to seek independent funding to further support research and development at the NHMFL.
Minimum qualifications include a PhD in physics, chemistry, engineering, or equivalent, with an emphasis on experimental research and a demonstrated record of academic excellence. We are seeking candidates who are highly motivated and eager to work flexibly and creatively in an interdisciplinary team environment. The ability to interact with physicists, engineers, designers, technicians and other lab personnel are all required.
