Dear colleagues,
We remind you that the Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) “Basics of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance” will be broadcast from October 5 on the FUN platform.
It is also our great pleasure to announce that the MOOC “Advanced NMR”, which is the second course of this three-part online learning program on NMR, is now open for free registration on the FUN platform.
Basics of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance
The MOOC “Basics of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance” is a 5-week program, which aims at providing the participants with basic knowledge about NMR. It is intended for undergraduate and graduate students as well as educators and professionals who need to gain proficiency as routine NMR users.
This course will present the basic principles of NMR spectroscopy as well as strategies to elucidate the structures of small organic molecules in solution from 1D and 2D 1H and 13C NMR spectra.
The course will be held from October 5 to November 10, 2021.
This course does not require previous knowledge about NMR spectroscopy. Nevertheless, the participants should have a background in basic chemistry (chemical elements, molecular structure) and in basic physics (magnetism, basic spectroscopy).
This course is taught by Olivier Lafon and Cédric Lion, professor and associate professor, respectively, at the University of Lille.

Advanced NMR
The 6-week MOOC “Advanced NMR” will provide the participants with advanced knowledge about NMR. In particular, it presents tools and concepts, such as product operators, coherence selection, and relaxation needed to understand how NMR techniques work, as well as specific techniques used to analyze particular samples, such as proteins, carbohydrates and mixtures of metabolites, or to acquire MRI images. This course is intended for participants who want to deepen their knowledge of NMR experiments.
The course will be held from November 2 to December 20, 2021.
Participants should have some basic knowledge of NMR spectroscopy and its application to small organic molecules in solution.
This course is taught by Olivier Lafon, professor at the University of Lille, Robert Schneider, NMR application scientist with Bruker BioSpin (Switzerland), Patrick Giraudeau, professor at the University of Nantes, Luisa Ciobanu, neurophysicist at CEA Saclay, and Yann Guérardel, senior researcher at the CNRS.
If you are interested, please register through the website

For both MOOCs, we estimate a workload of 3 to 4 hours per week. MOOC participants will learn through video lectures and online discussions with peers and professors. The acquired knowledge will be tested through weekly quizzes. English, simplified Chinese and Japanese subtitles are provided. Dr. Ming Shen, associate professor at East China Normal University, P. R. China, and Dr. Akiko Sasaki, researcher at Bruker BioSpin, Japan are acknowledged for the translation of the subtitles into simplified Chinese and Japanese, respectively.
Please distribute this announcement to your students as well as to your colleagues who may be interested.
You can already watch the MOOC trailers on the above websites.
With kind regards,
Olivier Lafon, Cédric Lion, Robert Schneider, Patrick Giraudeau, Luisa Ciobanu and Yann Guérardel
