An open PhD position is available at the Institute of Microstructure Technology IMT, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology KIT. https://www.pse.kit.edu/karriere/joboffer.php?id=81265&new=true
You will join the collaborative research center (CRC) 1527 High-performance compact magnetic resonance (HyPERiON), which aims to change the future of magnetic resonance (MR) by exploring the limits of extremely compact, highly sensitive, high throughput, and highly agile MR systems. The CRC is funded by the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft), and is a collaboration between 16 research groups in the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, the Technical University of Kaiserslautern, the University of Konstanz, and the University of Stuttgart.
KIT offers a research-friendly environment and being part of the KIT, you will have the possibility to join one of the graduate schools and benefit from its services and advantages. IMT is additionally well equipped with research facilities and equipment. You will have access to an X-band EPR system and several low-field and state-of-the-art high-field NMR and MRI systems. Furthermore, you will have access to several labs for micro-manufacturing, prototyping, electronics and RF characterization, optics, fluidics, chemistry, and biology.
Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) is another powerful analytical technique based on the magnetic resonance phenomena of spins. Unlike NMR, where the nuclear spins are measured, in EPR it is the electron spins that are measured, therefore this technique is typically applied to study molecules with unpaired electrons. In this project, your task will be to design and manufacture novel high-sensitivity EPR microwave resonators capable of operating at different fields (up to 9.4T (263GHz)), and their associated sample-handling microfluidic chips. The developed EPR detector should be compatible with an optoelectronic receiver that will be developed simultaneously by the project partners, and at the final stage of the project, the two systems should be combined and their performance should be characterized.
