Dear NMR Enthusiasts,

We hope you had a great summer this year and enjoyed all the exciting magnetic resonance conferences, including our first Twitter conference. In case you missed it, you can always find the link to the Twitter posters/videos provided on our website.

We will begin our online tutorial series starting September 20, 2022. This semester we have even more diverse tutorials planned, which will be delivered by leading scientists from around the world. The 51st Global NMR Educational Tutorial will be given by Danila Barskiy, Research Group Leader at the Helmholtz Institute, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Germany, on the topic:

“Parahydrogen-based Exchange Chemistry for Next-Generation Magnetic Resonance”

Abstract:
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is undergoing renaissance: the advent of hyperpolarization techniques allows enhancing weak nuclear signals by orders of magnitude, making possible measurements which were previously considered impractical, e.g., monitoring metabolism in vivo. Since large magnetic fields are no longer necessary to generate large nuclear magnetization, non-conventional signal detection approaches are now being considered as an alternative to conventional, inductive schemes. In my talk, I will focus on our recent work demonstrating that parahydrogen-based spin chemistry (in particular, SABRE-relay and PHIP-X methods) can be used for generating hyperpolarized analytes for benchtop (1 tesla) and ultralow-field (<100 nT) NMR. The presented exchange-based methods are applicable to a wide range of metabolites as demonstrated here for urea (15NP >1%), alcohols, aminoacids, ammonium, glucose possessing exchangeable protons and have potential applications for chemical analysis and measuring NMR spectra from natural extracts and biological fluids using portable spectroscopic tools.
