Applications are invited for a Post-doctoral research associate (PDRA) and a PhD student in hyperpolarised portable NMR spectroscopy to work in the group of Dr Meghan Halse in the Department of Chemistry at the University of York, UK. These positions are part of the Hyperpolarised NMR Solutions beyond the Laboratory (HyperSoL) project, funded by the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) Frontier Research Guarantee scheme. The goal of the HyperSoL project is to develop portable NMR technologies that exploit the signal amplification potential of parahydrogen hyperpolarisation to enable analytical applications beyond the typical laboratory environment. For informal enquiries about either position please contact Dr Meghan Halse by email: meghan.halse@york.ac.uk

Research Associate in Hyperpolarised portable NMR spectroscopy

This fixed-term position is available for up to 36 months. The research associate will have particular responsibility for the design and construction of portable NMR instrumentation for hyperpolarisation experiments. This will be achieved in collaboration with an external partner. The successful candidate will work as part of a team led by Dr Meghan Halse and will be expected to assist with the supervision of more junior group members. This position would suit a candidate with experience in magnetic resonance research, particularly in the development of NMR instrumentation and methods. The role will require the design and construction of instrumentation for hyperpolarised low-field NMR, along with data analysis and interpretation. Experience in either hyperpolarisation methods and/or low-field NMR development is desirable.

See the University of York website for full details and to apply.

Application deadline: 21 November 2022

PhD Studentship in Hyperpolarised portable NMR spectroscopy

A PhD studentship, fully funded for 3.5 years, is available to start on 1 October 2023 (an earlier start date is possible). This includes a tax-free annual stipend, tuition fees and funding for consumables. The project will involve the development of parahydrogen hyperpolarisation experiments for benchtop NMR, focusing on the design and implementation of novel NMR methods and data analysis strategies as well as instrumentation development, where appropriate.

The project will be carried out under the supervision of Dr Meghan Halse within the context of a broader project involving researchers at the University of York and external partners. Throughout the project, the student will gain advanced training in MR-based analytical chemistry and the theoretical basis of NMR, advanced data analysis and NMR experiment design and implementation on a range of instruments. This project will be carried out within the broader context of hyperpolarisation research at York. Therefore, in addition to meetings within the Halse research group, the student will also be exposed to the wider range of expertise within the Centre for Hyperpolarisation in Magnetic Resonance (CHyM) on topics including NMR spectroscopy, hyperpolarisation, MR theory, photochemistry, catalysis, and kinetics.

To apply for this project, submit an online PhD in Chemistry application.

Applicants should submit a PhD application to the University of York by 9th January 2023.
