Dear NMR community,

At the Leibniz Institute for Catalysis (LIKAT) in Rostock, Germany, we have the below position(s) available. Please forward this information to any students who might be interested.

Rostock is a small but vibrant city in the northeast of Germany directly at the Baltic coast. The Leibniz Institute for Catalysis is one of the largest publicly funded research institutes in the field of applied catalysis in Europe and is directly situated next to the University of Rostock.

Thank you!

Flow benchtop NMR spectroscopy for the mechanistic investigation of homogeneous catalysis with Rh phosphine complexes

In the research area “Modern Concepts of Molecular Catalysis” of the Leibniz Institute for Catalysis (LIKAT Rostock), the implementation of a MSc project and a PhD thesis is possible from the coming winter semester 2023/24. Low-field flow NMR spectroscopy is an increasingly growing online method for non-invasive monitoring of chemical reactions. However, its application is still limited in the field of organometallic chemistry, which includes air- and moisture-sensitive complexes. In particular, low-field flow 31P NMR spectroscopy is an attractive technique that allows precise assignment of species involved in stoichiometric and catalytic transformations involving sensitive organophosphorus species.

As MSc or PhD student, you will focus on NMR spectroscopic investigations of homogeneous rhodium catalysts using a low-field benchtop NMR device. You will learn how to optimise measurement parameters for NMR acquisition in flow mode and develop and optimise advanced pulse sequences to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio of your spectra. The foundations for these new projects were developed in an on-going doctoral thesis, currently focussed on the development and optimisation of advanced pulse sequences for monitoring fast catalytic reactions.

Excellent knowledge of either German or English language is required. Experience in the field of NMR spectroscopy is mandatory. Additional basic knowledge of organometallic chemistry and catalyst synthesis would be desirable. The applicant should have a high degree of self-motivation and actively participate in problem solving across research topics in international interdisciplinary teams. Applications from Applied Universities (“Fachhochschulen”) can be also considered. If you are interested and/or have questions about the projects, please contact Prof. Dr. Torsten Beweries by email Torsten.beweries@catalysis.de or phone +49 (0)381 1281104.
