Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position affiliated with the National High Magnetic Field Lab (NHMFL) in the research group of Prof Russ Bowers in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Florida, Gainesville. This position is funded by the NHMFL’s User Collaborative Grant Program and the National Science Foundation. The successful candidate will help to establish new facilities for parahydrogen enhanced NMR and MRI at the NHMFL and will utilize these systems in fundamental research and applications. 

Parahydrogen enhanced NMR is a rapidly advancing hyperpolarization methodology involving transformation of dihydrogen singlet spin order into NMR-observable magnetization by symmetry-breaking chemical interactions. Enhancements of the high-field NMR signals can exceed four orders of magnitude. The portfolio of molecules that can be hyperpolarized with parahydrogen is constantly expanding and includes a plethora of biomolecules, metabolites, indicators, and solvents, including water. The successful candidate will be well-positioned to engage leaders in the field, local faculty/staff, and prospective NHMFL users of the new technology. The development of instrumentation for optimal preparation and delivery of hyperpolarized water produced in the SWAMP effect (Surface Waters are Magnetized by Parahydrogen) is of particular interest. The candidate must have a PhD in Physics or Chemistry or a related field. An understanding and practical experience in NMR is essential. Experience with advanced NMR experiments, instrumentation, magnetic resonance imaging, and quantum mechanics of spin systems is desirable. In addition, the candidate must be willing to spend a fraction of the time helping to supervise student research.

The successful candidate will be affiliated with the NHMFL (https://nationalmaglab.org/) and will be based in Gainesville, Florida, where the Advanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy (AMRIS) facility and the Bowers lab are located. AMRIS is a state-of-the-art NMR facility for high-resolution solution NMR, solid-state NMR, microimaging, animal imaging, and human imaging. There are currently ten spectrometer systems, including an 800 MHz medium bore, a 750 MHz wide bore, an 11 T/40 cm bore horizontal animal imaging magnet, and two 3T human systems. These systems are available to University of Florida and external academic and industrial scientists.
